Sorry, unfortunately at this stage I am unable to make custom orders.
When I first started making pottery I noticed quite a few potters had a note on their website or instagram stating “sorry no custom orders” – with no explanation – and I thought to myself “that’s a bit rude – why not? ”
Now that I’ve been making pottery for a little while, I totally understand. Here’s my take on it, I hope you understand too:
A custom orders take a lot of time, and there is a long process of testing, trial and error. Most pottery items that I am proficient in making still take me approx 3 weeks to make from start to finish. This includes time to throw, carve, a week to bone dry before first bisque firing, then glazing or decorating, and then re-firing a second time. Aside from the time it takes to make an actual pot, there is also extra time spent in making the glazes from recipes, testing glazes, preparing & recycling clay, and waiting for deliveries to Cairns from ordering supplies.
So if a custom order goes wrong, and it often does, for many reasons – the pot may warp, crack, is too small, is too big, lid doesn’t fit, I don’t like it, I don’t enjoy making it because it’s not my style or taste, the glazes didn’t fire well, or the colours don’t work… the list goes on!.. This means I need to start over again from scratch and hopefully another 3 weeks it will be complete.
All of this trial and error takes time away from what I am good at and from what I enjoy making, and at the end of the day, I simply cannot afford the time it takes to experiment on someone else’s request.
My hope is to one day become a master potter where I will be able to whip up any request. Until that day, I thank you for your patience and understanding. I hope you enjoy the pottery I have available, as you now know every single piece has been handcrafted with a lot of time, care and love.
